Home Sweet Austin: Our New Hometown

Moving from our home of 34 years in Dallas to Austin, Texas, took a lot of work.

After the arrival of our first granddaughter, our hearts yearned to be closer, to be actively involved in her life in a way that a three-hour drive couldn't provide. So we moved to Austin.

Travel doesn't always require jetting off to far-flung destinations; it can also be found in our own backyard. So after unpacking the last of the moving boxes, I  set out to discover more about Austin, our new hometown.

Settlers from Europe began coming to the Austin area in the early 1800s, seeking new opportunities and a fresh start. The city was named after Stephen F. Austin, often called the Father of Texas for his role in colonizing the region. It became the state capital in 1846.

Over time, Austin grew into a vibrant and diverse community, blending the rich cultural heritage of its early settlers with the dynamic energy of a modern metropolis. Today, Austin continues to attract people from all walks of life, drawn by its thriving arts scene, the innovative technology sector, and the allure of its natural beauty.

An up-and-coming city with nearly a million inhabitants,  Austin is renowned for its open-minded spirit and vibrant energy.

Known as the Live Music Capital of the World, Austin's thriving music scene defines the city. From small intimate venues to massive outdoor festivals, there are plenty of live performances to enjoy. And let's not forget the iconic South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, where music, film, and interactive media collide to create an unforgettable experience.

This city has also become a hotspot for technology and innovation. With a growing number of tech companies and startups calling Austin home, it's no wonder this city has earned a reputation as a leading tech hub.

The western edge of Austin transitions to the Texas Hill Country, often considered the gateway to the region.   Outdoor enthusiasts thrive in Austin and the surrounding areas—a nature lover's paradise with its picturesque landscapes, the stunning Colorado River, and abundant parks and green spaces. Austin offers endless opportunities to connect with the great outdoors. Zilker Park, Lady Bird Lake, and Barton Creek Greenbelt will be the first places I explore when the summer weather cools.

The University of Texas at Austin and the State Capitol are jewels in this city's crown. The campus is impressive, with beautiful architecture and a vibrant academic atmosphere. It also has a program called Emeritus College, providing a wide range of classes, activities, and events tailored to the interests of retired people.

The State Capitol Building is a stunning example of Italian Renaissance Revival architecture. The rotunda is particularly impressive, with a magnificent dome adorned with paintings depicting scenes from Texas History.

When it's time to indulge your taste buds, Austin delivers. From food trucks dishing out mouthwatering delicacies to world-class barbecue joints and Tex-Mex eateries, the culinary scene in Austin is a melting pot of flavors and cultures. And to quench your thirst, you'll find an array of local craft breweries, wineries, and distilleries offering unique and refreshing libations.

We decided to settle on the southwestern outskirts of Austin for a little more space.   The move rewarded us with a picturesque countryside setting, providing a more serene and rural way of life on the fringes of the Hill Country. Lady Bird Johnson's Wildlife Center is just 15 minutes from my house, a botanical garden and research center dedicated to conserving and showcasing the native plants of Texas and promoting environmental sustainability.

I can't wait to discover Hill Country hidden gems, including Fredericksburg, Boerne, and Wimberly. These charming towns are known for their quaint shops, local wineries, and stunning natural beauty. The rolling hills and vibrant landscapes come alive in the fall with local farmer’s markets overflowing with apples, pumpkins, and pecans.

But what truly sets Austin apart is its unique and progressive mindset. Embracing the motto Keep Austin Weird, this city encourages individuality, creativity, and a celebration of being uniquely you. From quirky art installations to unconventional events, Austin is a place where you can let your freak flag fly.

Remember, the key to exploring your own hometown is to approach it with a curious mindset. Look for hidden gems, try new activities or cuisines, and appreciate the unique aspects of your own community.
