SkyHope: A Cool Way To Help.

By Liana Buonanno

Just a little over 3 years ago, a Long Island family thought they were the luckiest in the world. They were blessed with a little boy, Tommy, who joined his 2 older sisters; they felt complete. Only a few days later, that happy world came crashing down. The hospital called to say that their boy was born with a rare neurological disorder and he was unlikely to live past two years of age.

After rediscovering the floor under their feet, the distraught parents eventually found the leading doctor specializing in the disease at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Patient AirLift Services (PALS Sky Hope) made the treatment in Pittsburgh possible. Tommy's father, a Long Island firefighter, says that PALS is a big reason why Tommy just celebrated his 3rd birthday.

PALS provides free flights for patients in need of medical treatment, who are otherwise too far away from a medical facility and may not be able to afford other travel options. PALS also assists military personnel and their families with free flights to aid in the recovery and rehabilitation processes for our wounded veterans.

Although PALS can always use more pilots with access to airplanes, you don’t have to be a pilot to help Patient AirLift Services fulfill its mission. They are in great need for non-pilot volunteers. Among the many ways you can help:

  • “Auto” Pilots. Provide ground transportation between air terminals and medical treatment centers

  • Outreach. Spread the word about PALS to hospitals, veteran’s groups and other community organizations. This could be as simple as dropping off brochures.

  • Fundraising. Staff or help organize fundraising events in your local area. These events not only generate essential funds but enable PALS to reach new people who can benefit from PALS services.

  • Disaster/Humanitarian Response. PALS pilots are first responders during national disasters and humanitarian efforts. Volunteers can work from home or their offices to help PALS notify pilots, schedule flights, and act as a support system to the mission coordination staff.  You may also be able to help coordinate efforts on the ground.

  • Office Assistance. PALS offices are located on Long Island and they are always in need of volunteers to help out with filing, paperwork, and general office needs.

Get involved. Be a part of life changing service today.
