How Will You Do Halloween?

By Erica and Karen

We like Halloween. We’re allowed—even encouraged—to dress up. And then there’s the candy.

We don’t wear costumes—usually—but we dress. One of us is prone to shiny black skirts and jackets worn with bright orange tights and large black batwing earrings. The other is more subdued, maybe with a tasteful spider pin on one shoulder. Either way, we make it clear we are in the Halloween spirit.

We both are just terrible when it comes to candy corn. We eat it by the handful even though it is surely toxic as can be. We used to enjoy trick-or-treating with our children, both to see everyone’s amazing costumes—our favorite was a young girl dressed as a storm cloud, complete with actual flashing lightning—and because we could usually steal some candy corn. That’s no longer an option, and It is a bit unseemly for an unaccompanied adult to demand Halloween treats. Even an adult dressed for the occasion. We are forced to buy our own.

In any event, we still enjoy watching the inventive costumes, worn all day by lots of people. Makes the subway festive!

What will you wear this fine All Hallows Eve? And how do you feel about candy corn???
