Big Ideas In Retirement

By Erica and Karen

The recent election has blown up liberal complacency. We thought we were doing well. We wanted to end poverty. Achieve income equality. Eradicate disease and prejudice. Clean up toxic waste. And we did a lot of it. But we left some people and the environment far behind. We thought we had more time. But we do not.

So what now? The editors ofThe Economist have a suggestion. They write that liberals should not wallow in defeat. They should rise, invigorated, to the challenge of different ideas. They should reconsider what technology can do. They should reimagine the political order. They should think big, not simply offering tweaks to failed policies.

We are of the same mind. We're not saying we should abandon or change our core values. We are saying we need to re-envision how to make them work for everyone. With input from everyone.

We think our idea--that women who have retired after long careers should not be discarded but should rather be valued and put to use, enthusiastically, for what they have learned, is a big idea. We are on track, here at Lustre, to further that goal. But that's just one idea. We want to go bigger. Let's all get excited, and start thinking, together, how to move the world forward.
